The two adjuncts blend beautifully in the rounded mouthfeel of the base style to create something entirely unique and entirely Morgue.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This turned out to be one of my best beers in a\u00a0while. The Belgian pale ale base with\u00a0White Labs #WLP530\u00a0Abbey Ale yeast beautifully complemented the warm vanilla mouthfeel and floral lavender nose.<\/p>\n<p>Developing the beer was an adventure too. Upon inquiring on my Miller Beach neighborhood <em>Nextdoor<\/em>\u00a0social space where I might source some fresh lavender, the prevailing response was that it&#8217;s worth taking a trip to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelavenderhill.com\" target=\"_blank\">Lavender Hill Farm<\/a> in Niles, Michigan. We&#8217;re fortunate to have this\u00a0curious blessing just an hour or so away. Loddon Blue English Lavender (in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lavandula_angustifolia\" target=\"_blank\">Lavandula angustifolia<\/a>\u00a0species) was, to me, hands-down the most floral and flavorful of the options. Others seemed more grassy \u2014 perhaps great in a noble-hopped German lager (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reinheitsgebot\" target=\"_blank\">Reinheitsgebot<\/a> aside), but that wasn&#8217;t what I was going for.<\/p>\n<p>We visited the farm in the second week of July, which was already\u00a0well into the season and a bit late for the English lavender. Pickings were slim, but I managed to fill a twist tie mostly to the brim. Figuring\u00a0I already had far more than enough for my 5-gallon batch of beer, I got quite impatient towards the end and stuffed it with some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highcountrygardens.com\/perennial-plants\/lavandula-intermedia-grosso\" target=\"_blank\">Grosso lavender<\/a>, a classic hybrid\u00a0of L. angustifolia and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lavandula_latifolia\" target=\"_blank\">L.\u00a0latifolia<\/a>, which was very plentiful. Aside from the differences in aroma, they&#8217;re visually quite distinct, as seen in the images below. It was laborious, but almost meditative. My fingertips remained purple for a couple days.<\/p>\n<p>Wanting to make a vanilla lavender beer, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I already had a little less than half a bottle of vanilla vodka in my liquor cabinet from I-don&#8217;t-know-when. So I infused an ounce of lavender in a muslin bag\u00a0in\u00a0the vodka in a ball jar. After a mere day, it\u00a0went from clear to ruby-red!<\/p>\n<p>Then I blended the finished, kegged beer with the infusion to taste. It didn&#8217;t take much of this wondrous infusion to get the beer where I wanted it.\u00a0Maybe only 2 or 3 ounces for 5 gallons! Done to taste. I wasn&#8217;t being scientific about it. Blend a little today, wait a day and taste, blend some more&#8230; It&#8217;s the way I roll. Deal.<\/p>\n<p>Bonus. Lots of lavender left over, so I infused more plain vodka, then mixed the leftover lavender vanilla vodka with the lavender vodka and topped off an empty <a href=\"https:\/\/crystalheadvodka.com\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Aykroyd Crystal Head\u00a0vodka bottle<\/a>.
